Exploring all aspects of our English culinary heritage, The Native Blog seeks to give context, enlighten and inspire.
Whilst our European neighbours retained their centuries old peasant food traditions, ours largely disappeared; snuffed out in the late eighteenth century by the irrepressible forces of land enclosure and industrialisation. The blog is part exploration of this tortured culinary history, part speculation on what might have been had we remained a rural society, and part appreciation of the revolution in English cooking that has taken place in the last few decades.
Each article is generally accompanied by a recipe; mostly English fare inspired and developed from old recipes, literary references and inherited dishes, plus new modern recipes developed here at The Native. There is also the odd recipe 'borrowed' from our close continental neighbours to compare, contrast and give context.
